SPC Quote and Comment Column #101

Man is his own punishment
George Gurdjieff*

Gurdjieff taught that life was a pain factory.  The old adage that 'Misery Loves Company' remains true.  The first question to be addressed is; from what do we suffer?  Mankind certainly suffers from the various aspects of life itself.  Most people would readily agree with the existentialist philosopher, Jean Paul Sartre, that "Hell is other people".  But from the Fourth Way perspective, What most people suffer from is themselves!

The way people react to life's pain and disappointments says a great deal about their own level of being.  Just how people make themselves miserable is too long a topic to address, but these preliminary observations help to point the way.

People are forever getting offended.  Becoming offended at the mechanical/self-defeating behaviors of "others" remains the ego's favorite tactic for regaining the ego's delusional sense of innate status.  Becoming offended enables sleeping humankind to feel better about themselves while continuing to feed the individual's baseline sense of superiority over others.

An enlightened ego displays humility and gratitude as its chief feature; whereas, the sleeping ego continues to display a gradient scale of contempt towards other people.
